Bread and Batter, Salads and Vegetables

Breakfast wrap

I think I’m liking this WordPress app on my phone. This really has made it easier for me to update and keep on posting. Finally all the pictures of food I’ve taken can be shared. Am so happy right now. (Though the word ‘jakun’/’suaku’ keeps shouting in my head).

I love grilled caramelised sweet peppers. One day I realised it’s very easy to get them grilled and soft without baking them in the oven.

I melted some butter and olive oil in a regular pan and then pressed the halved peppers down with a wooden spoon ensuring that the surface gets cooked. The result was really yummy. Oh, don’t forget to salt them.

I put it on top scrambled eggs and salad in a wrap. Perfect healthy breakfast wrap.

Salads and Vegetables, Sides

Fresh Figs

Yesterday while I was doing some errands at Little India, I decided to pop over Chia’s to get some salad. I chose some arugula and while waiting for the stallowner to look up from his work (he was so busy calculating some invoices) I chanced upon a box of lovely purple fruit. There was a lovely purplish blush to it and then I saw in small print the word ‘fig’. My eyes lit up instantly. I asked him, “Are those fresh figs?” He looked up and I think he could see the wild excitement in my eyes (I have super huge bulging eyes) and actually put down his calculator to tell me more about fresh figs. He even said that he actually sells them year round but need to order first. He only displayed them because they were in season. Well, I had to buy them. I’ve tasted dried figs before but never the fresh ones!

Back at my mom’s, I was so excited cutting into the fruit. No wonder all my favourite chefs, especially my imaginary boyfriend, Jamie, loves it to bits. The fruit is luscious and so so sweet! Mmmmmmm….. I have found my favourite fruit.

You can eat the whole thing, skin included.
Arugula, fresh figs and feta cheese.
Salad with balsamic, honey vinagrette.

Perfect Roast Potatoes

I used to make roasted potatoes like this. Cube them, season and then throw them in the oven. And then I learnt, you first got to boil them till almost done, fry them in butter (or goose fat. Mmm, yeah, like I’m going to get halal goose fat here) and then you pop it in the oven. The result was really different from my usual method.

Boiled potatoes getting some love from Mr Butter.
Sprinkle with black pepper. I added a few garlic cloves just for a bit more added flavour.

Unfortunately, due to hunger pangs, I did not take an after photo. My sister loved it though.

Salads and Vegetables

Simple potato salad

I learnt this online. It’s just mayonnaise, fresh garlic, black pepper and salt with a bit of lemon juice. I substituted lemon juice with my ever handy kalamansi juice. Sweeter but less tangy.

The secret also lies in the potatoes. I used the washed red and brown potatoes from Australia. Delicious.

Cube and boil the potatoes, leaving the skin on.
Mix all the ingredients well for the dressing.
Mix the dressing well into the potatoes. Chill. Yummylicious.
